I have been completely absorbed in 2000s styling this year. I want to collect outfits that feel unmistakably retro but still polished and easy to wear. It has been lovely to see other people enjoy the series too, so the fashion archaeology continues.

This edit shows a little more skin than the last one. It feels right for the start of high summer, with the clean, sexy mood I love.

The brief is simple: a crisp, confident retro look that creates instant main-character energy without becoming complicated. Showing skin on its own can feel ordinary, and the wrong combination can look like sleepwear outside the house. The outfit needs a stronger point of view.

My references include Devon Aoki, Kathy Chow, Elva Hsiao and Keiko Kitagawa. For an American retro direction, simple camisoles or T-shirts with low-rise jeans make sense. Fashion minimalism was already a defining force in the 1990s, while low-rise flares became especially prevalent in the early 2000s. That timeline matters because the visual language crosses both decades.

There is also a later-2000s screen reference in the mix, closer to the casual styling associated with films such as Twilight. It is not an early Y2K reference, but it belongs to the wider 2000s mood.

For a Japanese 2000s look, I prefer something sexy but still girlish: a fitted shirt with a puffed or pleated mini skirt. The leopard-print skirt in this edit feels intensely Y2K. I have also been watching Keiko Kitagawa’s dramas and keep finding classic outfit references there.

For Chinese and Hong Kong pop references, I am looking across the late 1990s and 2000s rather than treating everything as strictly 90s. That includes the polished heiress look associated with Hong Kong television, Angelababy’s early glamour and Elva Hsiao’s confident retro styling. The oversized sunglasses here feel especially Elva.
